Why Put Your Resume on LinkedIn?
LinkedIn is a cornerstone of modern professional networking and job searching. While your LinkedIn profile itself acts as a dynamic, living resume, there are specific situations where having a static resume file attached is beneficial. Many companies use LinkedIn's "Easy Apply" feature, which often requires you to attach a resume file. This guide will walk you through the correct way to do it.
Method 1: Saving Resumes for "Easy Apply"
This is the most common and recommended method. It keeps your resume private and only attaches it when you actively apply for a job.
-
Navigate to Job Search Settings: Click on the "Jobs" icon in the top navigation bar. On the Jobs page, click on "Application settings" in the left-hand menu.
-
Upload Your Resume: In the Application settings, you'll see a section for "Resume." Click the "Upload" button and select your resume file (PDF or DOCX is recommended).
-
Manage Multiple Resumes: LinkedIn allows you to save up to four different resumes. This is perfect for tailoring your resume to different types of roles (e.g., a "Project Management" resume and a "Software Engineering" resume). You can set one as the default.
Now, when you use the "Easy Apply" feature, you can quickly select which of your saved resumes you'd like to attach to that specific application.
Method 2: Adding Your Resume as a Featured Post (Public)
If you want your resume to be publicly visible on your profile for anyone to download, you can add it to the "Featured" section. Use this method with caution, as it makes your personal information (like your phone number and email) publicly available.
- Go to Your Profile: Click on your profile picture.
- Add to Featured Section: Scroll down to the "Featured" section and click the "+" icon. If you don't have this section, click "Add profile section" and add it from the "Recommended" list.
- Upload Media: Select "Add media" and choose your resume file.
- Add a Title and Description: Give it a clear title like "John Doe - Resume" and click "Save."
Your resume will now appear as a prominent visual on your profile. This can be useful for freelancers or consultants, but for most job seekers, the private "Easy Apply" method is the safer and more professional choice.
